GUIDELINES TO AUTHORS

SUBMISSION OF MANUSCRIPTS

Manuscripts should be submitted in one original with original figures and two copies to a country editor or to:

Editor-in-Chief:
Charles K. Maitai,
Faculty of Pharmacy,
College of Health Sciences,
University of Nairobi,
P.O. Box 19676-00202
NAIROBI, Kenya.

e-mail: [email protected] or [email protected]

In addition to typed manuscript, the manuscript must be submitted on a 3.5” diskette in MS Word on an IBM compatible PC. Information on the text system and data must be included. Electronic manuscript can also be e-mailed to above address as an attachment as an alternative to sending a diskette.

Format and Style

Typing should be double-spaced with ca. 3cm margins on all sides. For the sake of uniformity, Americanized spelling should be adopted throughout. Papers are accepted on the understanding that their contents have neither been published nor submitted for publication elsewhere.

In all sections of the manuscript the font used should be large and easy to read. The beginning of paragraph should be clearly shown. Pages should be numbered consecutively. Abbreviations should not be used in the title and in the abstract

Original Research Papers

These papers are typically between 2 and 15 pages in length, including tables, figure captions and references.

Title Page

1.     Title of paper: This should be concise and carefully formulated. On no account should it extend over more than two lines

2.     Authors’ full names should follow. Names should be followed by complete postal addresses. The author to whom correspondence should be addressed should be marked with an asterisk (*)

Summary Page

The summary should not exceed 150 words. It should avoid detail but describe adequately the contents of the paper. It should be written such that it can be used verbatim in abstracting.

List three to seven key words to assist in listing.

Main Text

Main text begins on page 3. Normally, the following subdivision should be adhered to:

1.         Introduction: This should briefly present the importance of the work in relation to the field and indicate reasons for investigation and contribution.

2.         Experimental: Sufficient information should be provided to enable other investigators repeat the work. Details of procedures, which have been published elsewhere, should not be repeated but references must be cited.

3.         Results and Discussion: Results should be presented and interpreted as concisely as possible. The same data should not be presented in both figures and tables.

4.         Conclusion: Where appropriate.

5.         Acknowledgement

REFERENCES

Those cited in the text should be indicated by sequential numbers in square brackets and listed in the same order of appearance at the end of the text on a separate sheet. Journal title abbreviations should conform to the Chemical Abstracts Service Source Index (CAS SI). Typical examples are:

[1]        K.E. Wade and I.D. Wilson, J. Pharm. Biomed. Anal. 8 (1990) 401-410.

[2]        L. A. Mitscher, The Chemistry of Tetracycline Antibiotics, Medicinal Research Series, Volume 9. Marcel Dekker, New York. 1978, p 20.

FIGURES AND CAPTIONS

Figures can be in the form of original black inkdrawings on good quality paper of glossy black-and-white photographs (reproduction of colored photographs will be considered in exceptional cases). The amount of text within a figure should be kept to a minimum.

Special consideration should be given to the size of the lettering: please bear in mind that drawings are normally reduced to one column width (86 mm) and that the original lettering should neither become illegible nor remain too dominant after reduction. Heavy lines should be avoided. All original figures should be numbered and clearly identified with the name of the author at right hand corner using pencil.

Figure captions should be typed double-spaced on a separate sheet. The location of the figures in the text should also be clearly indicated.

TABLES

Tables and short bodies of tabulated information may appear within the text but larger tables should be typed on separate sheets and their position clearly indicated in the text. Each table should carry a concisely worded title. Column headings should be brief and the units should be indicated. Footnotes to tables should be keyed a), b), c) etc and the accompanying footnotes typed on the same page as the table where possible.

Equations, Units, Nomenclature

Equations should appear within the body of the text, visibly separated by adequate spacing. They should be consecutively numbered using Arabic numerals in parenthesis.

Use of SI units is urged and recommended. Generally accepted nomenclature and symbols are to be used. Less common symbols should be defined in the text, and if large numbers of symbols are involved they should be listed and defined on a separate sheet.

Short Communications

The main purpose of this kind of paper is rapid communication of brief (and often preliminary) research results and of analytical aids. They should be limited to one or two double-spaced written pages. In general the above instructions also apply to these papers except that no summary is required. Galley proofs will not always be supplied for short communications but may be requested at the time of submission.

GALLEY PROOFS

Except for short communications (as noted above) the author, to whom correspondence is to be addressed, will receive galley proofs as soon as they are available. These should be corrected and returned to the Editorial Office by the date specified in the accompanying letter. If proofs are not received by the specified date, the editors reserve the right to publish the paper without author’s corrections.

OFFPRINTS AND REPRINTS

The author(s) of a published paper will receive multiples of the articles upon payment of costs. Details of the costs will be dispatched with the galley proofs.
