Information for Authors

The African Journal of Reproductive Health is a multidisciplinary and international journal that publishes original research, comprehensive review articles, short reports and commentaries on reproductive health in Africa. The journal strives to provide a forum for African authors, as well as others working in Africa, to share findings on all aspects of reproductive health and to disseminate innovative, relevant and useful information on reproductive health throughout the continent.

Type of Articles

The journal will publish original research, review articles, short reports and commentaries. A cover page should accompany each manuscript and should include:

1.      the title and sub-title;

2.      the name(s) of the author(s);

3.      the affiliation(s) of the author(s); and

4.      three to six key words for indexing and retrieval purposes.

Original Research — The journal welcomes articles reporting on original research, including both quantitative and qualitative studies. Full-length articles should generally not exceed 35 typewritten, double-spaced pages, excluding tables, figures, and references. The subject matter should be organised under appropriate headings and sub-headings such as: Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, and Acknowledgements.

Review Articles — Comprehensive review articles on all aspects of reproductive health in Africa will also be considered for publication in the journal. Reviews should provide a thorough overview of the topic and should incorporate the most current research. The length of review articles and the organisational headings and sub-headings used are at the author’s discretion.

Short Reports — Brief descriptions of preliminary research findings or interesting case studies will be considered for publication as short reports. The length and organisation of short reports are left to the author’s discretion.

Commentaries — Commentaries or editorials on any aspect of reproductive health in Africa will be considered for publication in the journal. Opinion pieces need not reference previous research, but rather reflect the opinions of the author(s).

Submission of Manuscripts

All manuscripts should be in their final form when submitted, and should be submitted in triplicate. Authors may mail manuscripts to the journal’s office in Nigeria following address:

            No faxed submissions will be accepted. A covering letter accompanying the manuscript should certify that the article has not been previously published and is not being considered for publication elsewhere.

            All authors are advised to submit an electronic copy along with a hard copy of their manuscript, as this will spare remarkable time in the reviewing and typesetting processes.

            The journal will publish manuscripts written in English or French. AJRH will ensure that abstracts of all published papers are translated into English or French, and that both versions accompany the manuscript.

Uniform Requirements

Abstract — Articles and short reports should be accompanied by an abstract of not more than 150 words. The abstract should provide a concise description of the objectives of the study, methods used and major findings or conclusions.

Body — The body of manuscripts reporting on original research should be organised under appropriate headings and sub-headings such as Introduction, Methods, Findings, and Discussion. Authors of review articles and short reports are requested to organise the body of their manuscripts using headings and sub-headings appropriate to the material and discipline represented.

Tables and Figures — All tables and figures should be submitted on separate sheets of paper and should be clearly labelled. Coloured tables and figures may be reprinted in black and white. Authors should especially take care that all tables are clear and understandable by themselves, independent of the text. A reader should be able to read only the tables and easily grasp all information without the text. 

Acknowledgements — Acknowledgements should be included on a separate sheet of paper and should not exceed 100 words. Funding sources should be noted here.

References — References should be numbered in the order in which they occur in the text. These numbers should be inserted above the line on each occasion a reference is cited (e.g., ...as noted in other studies.^1-4). Numbered references should appear at the end of the article and should include the names and initials of all authors. The format of references should be as published by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors in the British Medical Journal 1988, volume 296, pages 401-405. The following are sample references for an article published in a journal and for a book:

Nichols D, Ladipo OA, Paxman JM and Otolorin EO. Sexual behaviour, contraceptive practice, and reproductive health among Nigerian adolescents. Stud Fam Plann 1986; 17(2): 100-6.

Author(s) Guarantee Form

All authors will be asked to complete and submit an author(s) guarantee form certifying that all authors named have contributed sufficiently to the work submitted and that the content of the manuscript has neither been previously published nor being considered for publication elsewhere.

La Revue Africaine de la santé Reproductive est un revue multi-disciplinaire et international qui publie des recherches originales, des articles, de brefs rapports et des commentaires sur la santé reproductive en Afrique. Le Revue s’efforce de fournir un forum aux chercheurs africains en Afrique pour partager leurs résultats sur tous les aspects de la santé reproductive et pour disséminer des informations novatrices, pertinentes et utiles sur la santé reproductive à travers le continent.

La Revue publiera des recherches originales, des articles, des brefs rapports et des commentaires. Une page de couverture devrait accompagner chaque manuscrit et devrait inclure:

i)          le titre et le sous-titre;

ii)         les noms des auteurs;

iii)         les affiliations des auteurs; et

iv)        trios à six mots clé pour la classification et l’extraction.

Recherche Originale —La Revue accueille les articles portant sur une recherche originale y compris les etudes aussi bien qualitatives que quantitatives. Sans compter les tableaux, les figures et les références, la longueur des articles, en général, ne devrait pas dépasser 35 pages dactylographiées en double interligne. Le manuscrit devrait être organisé en rubriques et sous-rubriques: Introduction, Méthodologie, Résultats, Discussions, Remerciements, et Références.

Articles —Les article et les compte-rendus sur tous aspects de la santé reproductive en Afrique seront aussi considérés pour publication dans la Revue. Les compte-rendus devraient fournir un aperçu a fond du sujet et devraient comprendre les données des recherches les plus récentes. Les auteurs sont libres de déterminer la longueur des articles et l’organisation des manuscrits

Brefs Rapports — Les brèves descriptions de résultats préliminaires de recherche ou d’étude des cas intéressants seront considérées pour publication comme de brefs rapports. La longueur et l’organisation des brefs rapports sont à la discretion des auteurs.

Commentaires — Les commentaires ou éditoriaux sur les différents aspects de la santé reproductive en Afrique seront considérés pour publication dans la Revue. Les opinions exprimées ne doivent pas provenir d’une recherche précédente, mais devraient réfleter plutot celles de l’auteur.

Tout manuscrit soumis devrait être dans sa version définitive et en trios exempaires. Les auteurs peuvent envoyer leurs manscrits au bureau africain de la Revue au Nigéria ou à son bureau européen en Allemagne au adresses suivantes:

Aucune soumission par fax ne sera acceptée. Une lettre explicative accompagnant le manuscrit devrait certifier que l’article n’a pas été publié auparavant et qu’il n’est pas soumis ailleurs pour publication.

La Revue publicra les manuscrits écrits en anglais ou en français. AJRH veillera à ce que les résumés de tous les articles publiés soient traduits en anglais ou en français, et que les deux versions accompagnent le manuscrit.

Références — Les references devraient être numérotées dans l’ordre qu’elles figurent dans le texte. Ces numéros devraient être insérés au dessus de la ligne chaque fois qu’une référence est citée (par exemple: par d’autre études^1-4). Les références numérotées devrient figurer à la fin de l’article et devrait inclure les noms et initiales de tous les auteurs. Le format des références devrait se conformer à celui publié par le Comité International des Editeurs de Revues Médicales dans le British Medical Journal 1988, Volume 296, pages 401-405, Voici des exemples des références pour un article publié dans un revue et pour un livre:

Chaque auteur aura à remplir et à remettre un formulaire de garantie certifiant que les différents auteurs cités ont contribué de manière significative au travail soumis et que le contenue des manuscrits n’a pas fait l’objet d’une publication antérieure et qu’il ne sera pas soumis ailleurs pour publication.
