68th IFLA General Conference and Council, Glasgow, 18-24 August 2002

The World Summit on the Information Society, Geneva, 10-12 December 2003
The World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) is being organized by the United Nations, in cooperation with other interested UN agencies, and with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) taking a leading role. The first phase of the summit will take place in Geneva, hosted by the government of Switzerland, from December 10-12, 2003. It will address a broad range of themes, and plans to adopt "a declaration embodying a set of principles and rules of conduct aimed at establishing a more inclusive and equitable Information Society', and, secondly, to initiate "a plan of action formulating operations proposals and concrete measures to be taken so that people all over the world will benefit more equitably from the opportunities presented by the Information Society." The second phase of the World Summit will take place in Tunis, hosted by the government of Tunisia, in 2005. http://www.itu.int/wsis/index.htm
