The African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF) is a new African public-private partnership, led by Africans and designed to respond to the needs of resource-poor farmers in sub-Saharan Africa. Its mission is food security and poverty reduction, and its structure and operations will draw upon the best practices and resources of both the public and private sectors.

In pursuing its mission, the AATF will link:

·         the needs of resource-poor farmers with potential technological solutions;

·         acquire technologies from technology providers through royalty free licenses or agreements along with associated materials and know how for use on behalf of Africa's resource-poor farmers;

·         establish partnerships with existing institutions to adapt agricultural technology to African circumstances;

·         ensure compliance with all laws associated with the use of these technologies;

·         will promote the wide distribution of the technologies as appropriate.

The AATF will facilitate partnerships and networks that link food security, poverty reduction, market development and economic growth in ways that will change the conventional approaches employed by African producers engaged in agri-business, to make these activities sustainable over time.

The AATF is a unique institution in several ways:

·         The model for the AATF has been developed through consultation with North American, African and European stakeholders on what they can contribute to food security and poverty reduction in sub-Saharan Africa.

·         The AATF will provide a "one-stop-shop" for structuring and accessing agricultural technologies, materials and know how. As the AATF gains experience in these areas, it will reduce transaction costs to both the providers of the technologies and the recipients.

·         The AATF will convene existing institutions to address all the elements of the product value chain, from product creation, distribution, and creation of markets for the product. Thus, the AATF will serve as a catalyst for reforms and the creation of agricultural markets. The AATF, in its partnerships and sub-licensing functions will seek to assist existing institutions to self-organise, to efficiently and effectively absorb new technological concepts and adopt them for productive use.

AATF, it will contribute to capacity building in Africa by engaging African institutions whenever possible to build capacity through the execution of those tasks which are at the heart of the AATF mission.

Founded in 1995, the African Development Institute is a nonpartisan public policy research organisation incorporated in New York. The African Development Institute is dedicated to fostering and promoting the human and material development of Africa. To achieve this goal, the Institute pursues three separate but related strategies: problem-oriented research; empowering education; and advocacy of self reliant and endogenous development policies.

The African Development Institute exists primarily to confront the prevailing development paradigm and promote alternative development strategies that are compatible with the value system of the African society. The purposes for which this Corporation has been organised are to:

·         promote unity, cooperation and understanding among Africans;

·         affirm and define the legacy of African Civilisations;

·         advocate policies aimed at promoting economic self-reliance and increasing the quality of life of Africans;

·         encourage and promote institutions that respect human dignity and the ideals of a civil society;

·         rescue and reconstruct the African value system;

·         identify the needs of Africans and the resources available to fulfil those needs.

Its most pressing challenge is to introduce a basic new thinking and action that will succeed in improving the quality of life of Africans and reverse Africa's perennial condition of domination and dependency. It advocates pan-Africanist development blueprints that address issues eg Africa's fragmented state system, Africa's historical/cultural heritage and contemporary social processes, and disengagement from the neo-colonial economic order.

Its Board of Directors, composed of diverse and visionary Africanists, handles the regular business of the Institute and reviews the Institute's policies, programmes, and operations. It also serves as the policy initiating body and oversees the implementation of policies.

Membership to the Institute is open to persons who demonstrate an expressed commitment and capability to the empowerment of Africa, and who pledge to adhere to the goals, principles and policies of the Institute. There are active, associate, life and honorary membership categories. Active membership is available to peoples of African descent who acknowledge their ancestry

It publishes Sankofa: Africa visions – a quarterly survey of issues pertinent to Africa's development.

While these broad roles guide the overall activities of the Centre, those roles are translated into pragmatic operational programmes or activities involving research/action research, pilot projects, training, and information and communication activities.

As a regional rural development organisation, CIRDAP's strategy is to assume a stronger role in helping address the issues of the rural - urban disparity that persist in all its member countries. In this regard, CIRDAP is a key player in the following areas:

Of a total of 241 projects initiated by CIRDAP, 29 are in the field of information and communication.

ICRA was founded in 1981 on the initiative of European members of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). ICRA is currently supported by France, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

International Centre for development oriented Research in Agriculture is a capacity building organisation. Its mission is to facilitate hands-on learning of professional skills needed to address complex problems in sustainable rural development. In the process of designing a training programme, ICRA has developed an ARD (agriculture, research & development) procedure. The ARD procedure integrates the contributions of different disciplines, organisations and stakeholders into the analysis of complex rural development problems and into the design of action plans to address these problems.

Clients of ICRA's training services are rural development and research organisations and universities in developing countries. Its current strategy is to use its experience increasingly to strengthen the capacity of partner institutions in developing countries to provide this kind of training. A CD-ROM has been developed to facilitate the delivery of this training by partners. Its learning materials are constantly updated on the Learning Materials pages of this website (soon available).

ICRA's role in this will be to train the trainers, assist them during the design and delivery of tailor-made training packages, and promote exchange of experience and the development of training materials, such as the CD-ROM.

Achieving impact is important to ICRA. Therefore ICRA focuses on collaboration with partner research and development organisations in the South that are in a process of reform towards more stakeholder involvement, interdisciplinarity and the use of broad systems Southern partner-ICRA-Northern partner. Currently ICRA works in such a set-up with ICAR and DFID (India) and INRA-B and GTZ (Benin). ICRA has a bilateral co-operation with the following organisations in the South: EARO (Ethiopia), ARC and NWDACE (South Africa), AARD (Indonesia), INRA (Morocco), AGRISUD (Congo Brazzaville), FOFIFA (Madagascar) and IFDC (Togo). In the past ICRA has also worked in a tripartite set-up with CIRAD and IDESSA (Ivory Coast), KIT and DRT (Tanzania), KIT and KARI (Kenya), NARO, Danida and DFID (Uganda), GTZ and SARI (Ghana), GTZ and CIAD (China), GTZ and INRA (Morocco), IRAG and World Bank (Guinea) and PARC and World Bank (Pakistan).

In the context of its training programmes in Wageningen and Montpellier, ICRA has conducted 130 studies and published the results jointly with client organisations in 34 developing countries. Subjects included field of crop and livestock production systems, marketing systems, chain development, natural resources management, nature and biodiversity conservation, food security, rural diversification, knowledge systems etc.

Details of its research and publications can be accessed online.

ICRA Bulletin, Farming System Analysis Papers and Working Documents can be ordered free of charge to a maximum of four. Single copies of the ICRA textbook are available free of charge to nationals of developing countries.

It has over 1500 network members, the majority being from developing countries. Membership of the IFRTD is free.

The Forum's long-term vision is of a world in which rural communities, particularly those which are poor or disadvantaged, have improved accessibility and mobility resulting from the development of rural transport systems that respond to their needs and potential. Large-scale investment in transport infrastructure has had little impact on the transport needs of poor rural women and men. The Forum's mission is to address this problem and to facilitate and promote the successful application of policies and practices that will satisfy the accessibility and mobility needs of women, men and children in rural areas, in such a way as to reduce poverty and vulnerability. The Forum publishes a quarterly newsletter on rural transport issues in English, French and Spanish.

The IFRTD has affiliated national networks in Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Côte d'Ivoire, Guinea, India, Kenya, Nepal, the Philippines, Senegal, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Uganda and Zimbabwe, and others are planned. ISAAA is a not-for-profit organisation that delivers the benefits of new agricultural biotechnologies to the poor in developing countries. It aims to share these powerful technologies with those who stand to benefit from them, and at the same time establish an enabling environment for their safe use. It is a small, responsive, non-bureaucratic international network with centres in developing and industrialised countries. Its centres are based in the Philippines, Kenya and the USA. A Global Coordinator based in the Southeast Asia Center in the Philippines provides overall management. Its centres in developing countries analyse the needs of the region's resource-poor farmers, and those in industrialised countries identify biotechnology applications for transfer.

ISAAA's mission is to contribute to poverty alleviation by increasing crop productivity and income generation, particularly for resource-poor farmers, and to bring about a safer environment and more sustainable agricultural development.

ISAAA's objectives are the transfer and delivery of appropriate biotechnology applications to developing countries and the building of partnerships between institutions in the South and the private sector in the North, and by strengthening South - South collaboration.

Subject areas: Environment; Radio broadcasts; Sustainable development

The Sustainable Development Network Programme (SDNP) is a global catalytic initiative launched by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in response to Agenda 21, which articulated the need for improved information dissemination to support sustainable development. The programme is geared towards facilitating communication between users and suppliers of sustainable development information in developing countries.

Established in November 1997, the Jamaica Sustainable Development Networking Programme (JSDNP) provides a meeting place that services the sustainable development information needs of all sectors of society. Its objectives are to: introduce and connect public, private and non-government sector agencies to local and international sources of information on sustainable development, utilising the Internet and other communication tools; develop appropriate information services to support the implementation of local and national development plans.; provide information on Jamaica's environment and social and economic development via the Internet to the international community.

The JSDNP:

  • maintains a central website;
  • collects, collates and posts information relevant to sustainable development;
  • establishes community telecentres and information networks;
  • conducts training in information management and computer-mediated communication;
  • assists partners in establishing websites, and sourcing and posting information;
  • hosts websites for clients and partners.
The JSDNP primarily makes use of computer technology. However, the use of conventional communication tools such as radio, television and the print media will also be promoted to reach a greater number of stakeholders who do not have access to computers and the Internet. The JSDNP facilitates access to its resources by collaborating with other information providers to establish electronic community access points in several parishes around the island.

Focus is placed primarily on the needs of community-based organisations in rural areas as well as farmers, women's groups, small businesses and entrepreneurs. Biodiversity, community development, development projects, environment, environmental education, sustainable energy, sustainable agriculture and sustainable business are all covered.

Other primary beneficiaries include partners in development, such as government agencies, the private sector, NGOs, international donors, teachers and students, research institutions, and persons who wish to acquire information on markets and investment opportunities, environmental protection, pollution control and natural resources management, as well as sustainable development policy and programme information.

The Network for International Development and Cooperation (NIDECO) is a centre of competence within the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zurich), bringing together researchers and academics from a wide range of disciplines. It was launched in October 2002 with the purpose of facilitating the ETH's task of sharing its capacities in the field of technical and social science research with developing countries and countries in transition.

This is to be seen against the background of developments in recent years, whereby researchers and politicians in the developed world have come to recognise the importance of knowledge and research capacities in international development and cooperation. In particular, they acknowledged the need to share what is considered as "Global Public Goods" in order to resolve national and international problems.

NIDECO organises interdisciplinary seminars every summer term, giving doctoral students and researchers the possibility to present their projects in international development and cooperation with developing countries or countries in transition. In addition, NIDECO hosts occasional workshops open to other relevant groups.

NIDECO Portrait and Annual Report 2003 has just been released and can be downloaded in PDF format from its website or ordered free of charge.

SACRED Africa's main aim is the sustained improvement of food security, social welfare and income of rural agricultural communities while protecting and enhancing the environment.

It has adopted a participatory adaptive research approach whereby it researches with farmers on ways of improving agricultural productivity, nutrition, environmental quality and income. Current research projects include managing beneficial interactions for legume intercrops (MBILI); soil fertility improvement using natural/organic methods (including rock phosphate dust); development of biopesticides with farmers; and cassava mosaic disease control. Messages and technologies derived from this research are disseminated through farmer-to-farmer extension approaches. In carrying out its research work, the NGO collaborates with various local and international research institutions such as the University of Nairobi, Moi University, World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF), African Centre for Technology Studies (ACTS), Natural Resources Institute (NRI) and the University of Wales (UK) among others. Its research work is currently funded by the Rockefeller Foundation, the Tudor trust (UK), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the UK Department for International Development (DFID).

The Centre, the only one of its kind in East and Southern Africa, allows free meeting and exchange of ideas between researchers, community development workers and farmers. SACRED Africa hopes to initiate diploma and degree courses (in collaboration with several universities) in participatory community development, sustainable agriculture, agricultural biodiversity, organic agriculture, project management, and self-help group development and management. The Centre believes skills in these subjects are critical in facing the enormous food challenge of the African continent.

The NGO promotes exchange of information between farmers, extensionists, researchers and other development workers. Toward this end, the NGO has started a community library with over 3000 books, videos, CDs, workshop reports, newsletters and magazines.

It also publishes the SACRED Africa newsletter.

The SUSTRAN Network has a (currently dormant) electronic newsletter, SUSTRAN News Flashes, and has established a successful E-mail-based discussion list, SUSTRAN-DISCUSS, which is devoted to discussions on people-centred, equitable and sustainable transport issues, primarily in developing countries.

A number of its publications are accessible on its website, and can be downloaded in pdf format, as can its Other Key Written Resources List and Useful Links for Better Transport.

It is the chief adviser to the Government on all matters pertaining to science and technology and their application to the socio-economic development of the country.

The COSTECH library, which houses more than 10 000 volumes of books in science and technology, also has a section of special collections of publications that deal with research matters. The special collections include research reports and reprints of publications; reports by affiliate research and development institutions; multimedia publications; and a COSTECH publications depository. The library caters for scientists and any other organisations who might be interested in Tanzanian research activities.

With support from the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) of Canada, databases have been created on ongoing projects, active scientists and technologists, and R&D institutions. Information available in these databases is very useful to the Government, researchers, development agencies and institutions that are interested in assisting Tanzania in its socio-economic development.

In order to fulfil its role of popularising science and technology in the country, COSTECH disseminates research information through the Internet, the media (radio, television, newspapers), and production of publications. The Commission has published or supported publishing of proceedings of scientific meetings, annual reports; newsletters such as the Tanzania S&T News and the Global Environmental News; books and brochures among others. Tanzanians worldwide have been kept up-to-date through COSTECH's Electronic News Bulletin which can be accessed through E-mail services.

The Commission, in collaboration with its parent Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education, prepares weekly science and technology radio programmes using the services of Radio Tanzania Dar es Salaam (RTD), which reaches all over the country. The purpose of these programmes is to popularise science and technology to the general public. From time to time, COSTECH sends out research information to local newspapers and TV stations which publish/air the information so as to reach the general public.
